16-year-old charged in fatal Aurora crash

AURORA, Ill. (WLS) -- A 16-year-old boy has been charged with reckless homicide and aggravated street racing related to a crash that killed a 49-year-old Aurora man on December 4, according to theWill County State's Attorney's Office.

The teenager from Aurora surrendered to Aurora Police on Wednesday and appeared in Will County Juvenile Court on Thursday morning, officials said. He was remanded into juvenile custody.

Charles Siebel, Jr., of Aurora, was killed in the crash after he was turning northbound onto Eola Road when his car was hit by a Dodge Charger traveling southbound at a high rate of speed, police said. Police say it appeared that the 16-year-old boy, who was driving the Charger, was drag racing with a 20-year-old man from Plainfield, Ill.

Siebel and his daughter had to be extricated from their car by the Aurora Fire Department. Siebel died at Rush Copley Medical Center. His daughter was hospitalized for serious-but-non-life threatening injuries, police said.

The 16-year-old boy suffered minor injuries while the 20-year-old driver refused medical attention.

A status hearing on the teenager's custody has been scheduled for 9 a.m. Dec. 22 at the River Valley Justice Center in Joliet.

Aggravated street racing is a Class 4 felony. Reckless homicide is a Class 3 felony. The maximum sentence the youth faces is to be held in an Illinois Department of Corrections juvenile facility until his 21st birthday.

Prosecutors continue to investigate the case and have not determined whether to file charges against another individual who was allegedly involved in the crash.
