Cardinal George fighting infection

CHICAGO -- There are new concerns Tuesday night about the health of Francis Cardinal George. He is fighting an infection and spent much of Tuesday with his doctors. The persistent infection is one of several side effects of his ongoing cancer treatment.

Archbishop-Designate Blase Cupich was subbing tonight for the man he's not scheduled to replace until mid-November. Shortly after Francis Cardinal George's weekend press conference, he developed an infection that sent him back to his cancer doctors at Loyola.

"He was under some real pain, he is suffering that way," said Cupich, "and his is taking that experimental medication and one never knows how that's going to work out. So my message is: Keep praying."

"He is battling an insidious disease," said Ald. Ed Burke of Chicago's 14th Ward, "but he's a fighter and with the help of God he'll be back."

"Sort of a different moment for the archdiocese as he's welcoming a successor and deals with health problems," said Monsignor Ken Velo. "He has a lot of prayers."
