CHICAGO (WLS) -- Thousands of fans are lined up outside the United Center Monday to watch the Blackhawks practice.
More than 10,000 fans lined up early for the event, with many arriving several hours before the doors opened.
"We got here at noon," said Lynn Hoger, from Berwyn. "I have a 17-year-old who wanted to be right at the glass."
Captain Jonathan Toews briefly spoke to the crowd, urging them to root on the younger players. There is a lot of excitement about the team defending their Stanley Cup title.
"They're pumped here today, they've got the families involved, I think we're all ready," said Claudia Hertz.
"Just overall pretty excited about the season because it's been a little bit of a layoff since June, when they won the Stanley Cup," said Timothy Motz. "We're very excited to be here, can't wait to see the practice."
Patrick Kane was missing from Monday night's the scrimmage. After a few days in South Bend, the Blackhawks rested several several stars in preparation for a pre-season game against rival Detroit on Tuesday.
"A hundred percent behind the team. A hundred percent behind Patrick Kane. Whatever happens happens, we just want him out there to play," said Carla Piunti, of Chicago Heights.
Despite an ongoing criminal investigation, fans stand by their Stanley Cup champions.
"Oh, most definitely. Most definitely. Whatever happens, the truth will come out," Piunti said.
The Blackhawks' first game is on Oct. 7 against the New York Rangers.
