After witnessing homicide, Chicago police shoot man in Humboldt Park

CHICAGO (WLS) -- A man was shot by Chicago police after officers witnessed a homicide in the Humboldt Park neighborhood Friday night, Chicago police said.

Officers were on patrol near Maplewood Avenue and Division Street at about 11:30 p.m. when they witnessed a shooting, police said. The officers immediately got involved and engaged a male subject.

Shots were fired and the man sustained non-life threatening injuries and was transported to a hospital.

The shooting is being investigated by the Independent Police Review Authority.

"At this point IPRA is on the scene, they're conducting their investigation and further questions will be answered through IPRA," said Chicago Police Department Coordinator Glen Brooks.

One man, who did not want to give his name, said he was in a restaurant and saw what let up to the shootings.

"We're sitting down and eating and a car one time looking at us and like they said something and so we turned around and then the second time they came back around and I don't know if it was the second or third time they came, they slowed down and they started shooting and there was one of the guys right there talking to a girl," the man said. "He seen them shooting so he came around and everyone started shooting back."

The man killed in a shooting witnessed by police has been identified to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office as 18-year-old Louis Rodriguez of Chicago. Police said he was riding in a stolen car.

No officers were injured in the incident, police said. The officers involved will be placed on desk duty for 30 days, per department policy.
