Boy, 1, critically injured in Far South Side shooting, police say

CHICAGO (WLS) -- An infant was shot and critically injured in Chicago's Washington Heights neighborhood Thursday evening, police said.

The 1-year-old boy was sitting in the rear passenger seat of a car with four other people inside that was parked at 99th and Throop streets, police said. A dark-colored, older model sedan pulled up alongside and shots were fired, striking the boy in the head, police said.

Two other children were in the car but were not hurt, according to police. Police said the driver was dropping an adult off at the home where the car was parked, though it was not clear if the other adult was in the car at the time of the shooting.

Police are investigating whether the shooting is a case of a mistaken car.

The child was initially taken by the driver of the car to Little Company of Mary Hospital in critical condition and then transferred to Comer Children's Hospital, police said.

"It's gotta be tough on the mother right now, as they rushed that baby to the hospital," said crisis responder Andrew Holmes.

No one is in custody. Area South detectives are investigating. Police are looking for an surveillance video that could lead them to the gunman.

"My message to the perps is it won't be long, I guarantee you. You won't get away with this one. You won't get away with this one," Holmes said.
