CHICAGO (WLS) -- A 14-year-old girl was critically wounded after she was shot in the face in Gresham Sunday.

The girl was inside a residence in the 1200-block of W. 81st Street just before 5 p.m. when she was struck in the face by gunfire, according to Chicago police.

She was transported to Comer Children's Hospital in critical condition as police work to figure out what led to the shooting.

One neighbor said he heard what sounded like a person screaming before a flood of first responders ended up on his block.

"I heard somebody holler, 'No, no, no,'" said Joseph House. "Like 'get off me, don't do this to me.'"

Following the screams, House said there was a deafening silence until police and emergency responders were feet away from his Gresham home.

"We got to be vigilant," he said. "We got to talk to our other neighbors because this stuff is getting too close to home."

"These are a lot of missing plates at the table, somebody's child is not at that table, somebody's loved one -- especially a female -- is not at that table," said crisis responder Andrew Holmes.

According to recent Chicago Police reports, there have been at least 12 young people shot in the city this month. Four were shot Sunday.

Holmes is pleading with all parents.

"You as parents, if you know that's your loved one, call the police department. Get them in there and let's find out exactly what happened because we have kids here that can't get up," Holmes said.

No one is in custody and area detectives are investigating.
