CHICAGO (WLS) -- City of Chicago employees will soon be offered benefits to cover gender reassignment services.

Until now, coverage was excluded from city health care benefits. Now, Mayor Rahm Emanuel says non-union employees will receive the benefit.

The city is now working with its labor partners to also offer gender reassignment benefits to union employees.

The change is expected to go into effect Oct. 1.
