40-year-old love note still stands high above Chicago church

CHICAGO (WLS) -- For 40 years, a secret symbol of everlasting love has remained intact high above a Chicago church.

In 1976, tuckpointer Donald O'Reilley caulked his name and is wife's initials on the cross that sits on top of the Loyola Madonna Della Strada Chapel in Chicago.

He wrote the name "Don" and the initials "CM" for his sweetheart, Carole Martin.

Chopper7HD spotted his work from above last week.

O'Reilley also inserted a bicentennial quarter into some more caulk near the initials.

All of it is still there, withstanding many years of harsh Chicago weather and the test of time.

Donald and Carole have since died. Their son, Michael O'Reilley, is a media manager for ABC7.
