2 dead, 1 critical in East Garfield Park shooting
CHICAGO (WLS) -- Two people shot and killed in broad daylight Wednesday in the city's East Garfield Park neighborhood.
Investigators said a car pulled up, two people got out and opened fire.
A third victim was injured and taken to Stroger Hospital.
"It was like pow, pow, pow, pow, pow it was going rapid," said neighborhood resident Maurice Wesley.
Maurice Wesley said he is afraid his west neighborhood is under siege after two people were killed and another critically wounded following the shooting.
"It could have been letting off more, but I heard like 6 to 10 shots going off," Wesley described.
Dozens of bullet casing liter the street after the shooting which happened in the Chicago teen's East Garfield Park neighborhood - Wednesday around 10 o'clock near Ohio Street and St. Louis Avenue.
Witnesses told police four people were standing on the corner when a four-door car pulled up and two gunmen got out and opened fire.
Two men, both believed to be around 19-years-old were killed, while a third man, possibly aged 29, was critically wounded after being shot in the chest.
All the victims are African American.
Investigators said the attack may be the result of an ongoing gang conflict over drug territory.
"We know there's a gang conflict and an open air drug market in this location. We've had historic violence in this area," said Chicago Police Department Deputy Chief Al Nagode.
Authorities said officers stationed nearby heard the shots and rushed to scene only to stop a fleeing vehicle trying to get one of the people targeted in the shooting to the hospital.
And while some residents remain concerned about a possible spike in violence, others like Maurice Wesley are just hoping to stay safe.
"I got to do what I got to do. I've got to live through it. It's just life in Chicago," Wesley said.
