NYPD officer shot in head in East Harlem, suspect in custody

EAST HARLEM -- An NYPD officer was shot in the head in East Harlem Tuesday night.

The officer was rushed to Harlem Hospital in critical condition.

This all started when the NYPD officer was responding to a report of a shooting near 102nd Street. He approached a group standing near an FDR Drive footbridge.

There was an extended chase of one of the members of the group, who was on a bicycle. In an exchange of gunfire near East 120 Street, the officer was shot in the head.

During an ensuing search another shot person, believed to be suspect, was found at east 125th street.

That person was shot in the leg and taken to New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center. A weapon was recovered, and the bicycle was also recovered.

The officer was shot in the forehead. He is assigned to PSA 5, which patrols housing. He is a five year veteran.

Police Commissioner Bill Bratton has arrived at the hospital and a press conference is expected soon.

Traffic is backed up from the 120's to the 130's on the FDR Drive.
