Frank Lloyd Wright's Bach house restoration complete
The Emil Bach house on North Sheridan Road was built in 1915, and it is now is the final stages of returning to its glory days.

CHICAGO (WLS) -- When famed architect Frank Lloyd Wright died in 1959 at age 91, he left behind a wide variety of buildings - many of which are churches, schools and homes right here in the Chicago area. One of those homes has been totally restored and is now open to the public.

The Emil Bach house on North Sheridan Road was built in 1915, and it is now is the final stages of returning to its glory days. For the past two years, Jennifer Pritzker has donated over a million dollars to the project - and the money and hard work have paid off.

"The house has been fully restored to historical landmark conditions, back to 1915 as much as possible," said Bruce Boyd, manager of the Emil Bach house.

It's Boyd's mission to tell the house's story. Bach was a wealthy owner of a brickyard and he and his wife lived here for 19 years. It's one of Wright's "prairie style" homes, which brings the outside in and the inside out.

"You see the horizontal lines more than the vertical lines between the bricks," Boyd said. "That was done intentionally to give you the look of the prairie."

The Bach house takes you back in time to 1915, but it has been updated with modern amenities. The kitchen looks like one that great grandma used to work in, but behind the wood paneling are the appliances we can't live without.

When the house was built in 1915, it cost $9,000. Now it's worth over $2 million. The house is not for sale, but the three bedroom two bathroom house can be rented out for special occasions.

"Emil Bach house is a vacation rental or event rental space," Boyd said. "You can rent for two nights on weekends, the whole house and it sleeps up to maximum of five."

The house, plus a modern Japanese tea house at the back of the lot, is $750 per night until June 1. After June 1, it will be $1,495 per night.
