CHICAGO (WLS) -- An effort to protect Chicago's lakefront from erosion took another step forward Friday.

Restoration work has been completed on a stretch of lakefront from Montrose to Irving Park. Illinois Senator Dick Durbin helped cut the ribbon Friday morning.

The work included repairs to a gravel running path and resurfacing a fishing pier. Once the entire project is completed 9.5 miles of lakefront will be restored.
