NEW YORK (WLS) -- Stop washing jeans, Levi Strauss President Chip Bergh said, if you want them to last.

Bergh said in an interview with Fortune Magazine that his own jeans don't go near a washing machine.

"These jeans are maybe a year old, and these have yet to see a washing machine. I know that sounds totally disgusting. I know it does," Bergh said.

Bergh aired his dirty laundry to help others keep their favorite pairs of jeans looking like new.

"If you talk to real denim aficionados, they'll tell you don't wash your blue jeans," he said.

Tommy Hilfiger agrees. He told TMZ "I never wash my Levi's."

How should you keep them spelling good? Spritz them with white vinegar and vodka and hang them to air dry. Another suggestion? Freeze your jeans once a month to kill off bacteria, which can cause them to smell.

In a commercial, The Gap recommends turning them inside out and freezing them from overnight to up to two days.
