Chicago community leader Henry English dies at 73

CHICAGO (WLS) -- Henry English, a leader for change in Chicago's struggling neighborhoods, died following a car accident over the weekend.

The 73-year-old was heading to a voting event Saturday when his car was rear-ended at Lake Shore Drive and 63rd Street. He suffered a heart attack after the accident and died a short time later.

English founded the Black United Fund of Illinois, which raises money for not-for-profit groups and programs.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel issued this statement Saturday regarding Henry English's death:

"With the passing of Henry English, the City of Chicago has lost one of our most iconic advocates for change. As President and CEO of the Black United Fund of Illinois, Henry made it his mission to use the power of philanthropy to build stronger communities and open countless doors of opportunity for more Chicagoans. Henry's impact was large, his legacy will be everlasting, and he will be deeply missed by our entire city. On behalf of the City of Chicago, I express my deepest sympathies to Henry's family and countless friends during this difficult time."

Funeral arrangements are still pending.
