Indiana drug arrests aimed at curbing HIV outbreak

INDIANAPOLIS (WLS) -- Indiana law enforcement officials announced a wave of drug arrests aimed at curbing an outbreak of HIV.

There are more than 100 reported cases of HIV in southeastern Indiana, all of them linked to intravenous drug use.

Prosecutors announced that an undercover operation has led to the arrests of 28 suspected drug dealers. However some residents say the arrests are too little, too late.

"They're five to ten years behind on everything," said Rick Gabbard.

Local police said they'll continue to seek out drug dealers.

In the meantime, officials are urging drug users to participate in a needle exchange program, which has already passed out thousands of sterile needles.
