WHEELING, Ill. (WLS) -- Horacio Reynoso Jr. tried to take his five children out of school while smelling like alcohol and had an unloaded shotgun in the passenger seat of his vehicle, Wheeling police said.

Walt Whitman Elementary School staff said they smelled alcohol on Reynoso, 20, when he arrived at the school in the 100-block of Wille Avenue around 11:30 a.m. Wednesday.

They called the mother of the children, who said she did not want them released to Reynoso, and contacted Wheeling police.

Officers found out Reynoso drove to the school with a passenger and parked on the property. The passenger said the 20-year-old had a shotgun. Police found the unloaded Winchester .20 gauge shotgun in the passenger area of the vehicle.

He was taken into custody and admitted to having the gun.

Reynoso, of the 200-block of Highland Avenue in Wheeling, was charged with unlawful use of a weapon, unlawful use of a weapon on school property and not having a FOID card.

He is being held on $40,000 bond.
