NW Side standoff ends after 6 hours

CHICAGO (WLS) -- A standoff on Chicago's Northwest Side ended Friday evening after nearly six hours.

The incident began when police say they received a call around 9:30 a.m. Friday reporting of an intruder/suspicious person inside a home in the 6300-block of Roscoe in the city's Portage Park neighborhood.

Police say officers responding to the scene made contact with a female occupant of the residence and while talking to her, a male occupant was heard inside, possibly needing medical attention. Officers attempting to gain access into the house were confronted by a man armed with a crossbow.

The Chicago Police SWAT unit responded and were able to convince the female occupant to exit the home.

"A decision was made to have the officers enter the house and render medical assistance if necessary," said Deputy Chief Dean Andrews, Chicago Police Department. "The officers were able to enter the house, find the male occupant, bring him out safely and successfully, and both occupants of the house are currently being treated by medical personnel."

No other details have been released. Police remain on the scene and continue to investigate.

While residents in the quiet area were shaken by the incident, they were happy to see the response from the emergency first responders.

"I like to see the response that they have right now. I see SWAT and everything, so I feel pretty safe right now," said neighbor Brian Rosanco.
