Illinois treasurer auctioning off $45K in unclaimed property

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WLS) -- The Illinois Treasurer is auctioning off 1,600 items of unclaimed property worth $45,000 online from June 20 to 24.

Auction items include a 1911 Indian Head 2 dollar gold coin, a 22KT gold necklace, a 1918 Illinois Centennial half dollar coin, and vintage Hohner harmonicas.

The treasurer's office has more than a million pieces of unclaimed property, but only items that have been unclaimed for 10 years or longer are up for auction. Each item was appraised by an outside vendor.

The treasurer's office encourages residents to check the I-Cash link every six months as thousands of items are surrendered every year. There is never a fee to search or return unclaimed property.
