MARION, Ind. (WLS) -- A black Indiana firefighter wants his boss fired for allegedly throwing a noose at him during a training exercise.

Mikel Neal of Marion said the incident happened during a session about tying knots. He said his assistant fire chief asked for the sample rope, tied a noose and tossed it to Neal.

Neal said the action is particularly appalling in Marion, which is the site of the last lynching in a northern state in 1930.

"This is not a joke. It's not funny. It is not a laughing matter. A noose in Marion, Indiana, if he doesn't have that brain power then there is no place for him in public service," Neal said.

Neal is asking Marion's board of public works and safety to fire that assistant fire chief, who has been suspended with pay pending the outcome of a disciplinary hearing next week.
