DA: Report of needles in Pa. candy 'unfounded'

KENNETT SQUARE, Pa. -- The Chester County district attorney said Friday the report of sewing needles in Halloween candy earlier this week are "unfounded."

D.A. Tom Hogan did not call it a hoax, but tells Action News the juveniles involved have now recanted their stories of tainted candy.

More details are expected later in the day. There was no immediate word on any charges.

At midnight Sunday, the family reported finding sewing needles in five snack-size Twix candy bars.

In an earlier report one child told Action News, "Everybody checked their candy, and mom sent an email to all the other friends."

He said he went door to door with three other trick-or-treaters on Halloween.

After police alerted the community and showed the reports on their Facebook page, a second report came in Sunday afternoon.

A separate child from the original complainant brought in a Snickers candy bar with a sewing needle inside, police said.

All the children, ranging in age from 7 to 12, claimed they went door to door in the Stenning Hills neighboring bordering South Union Street and West South Street.

Also this week, investigators in Gloucester Township, New Jersey say a report there of needles in Halloween candy has been determined to be false.
