"We cannot take our eyes off the ball," Chicago Police Superintendent Larry Snelling said at a news conference following a violent July 4 holiday weekend. "We cannot stop thinking about the people who have been victimized by this crime."

While long holiday weekends often see a spike in gun violence, Chicago police and city officials are working to curb shootings and make the city safer.

Chicago police officer among 2 shot to death in East Chatham, CPD says

A Chicago police officer was among two people shot and killed on the city's South Side on Monday night, CPD said.

The shooting happened in the East Chatham neighborhood near East 80th Street and South Ingleside Avenue around 8 p.m.

CPD Supt. Larry Snelling said officers stopped vehicle with three people inside and approached. That's when someone inside fired shots, striking the 26-year-old officer multiple times. Another person inside the vehicle was also fatally shot.

Snelling said at one point, an officer discharged his weapon at the scene. Detectives are still analyzing the firearms belonging to the officers involved in Monday night's incident, he added.

The suspected shooter tried to flee the scene on foot, but was later taken into custody, Snelling said. A third person, who was inside a rear seat of vehicle, was taken into custody on the scene.

Fellow officers took the injured officer to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. He had served just under three years with CPD, Snelling said.

Officers recovered two guns from the scene.

One of the guns was in the possession of the person who suffered fatal gunshot wounds inside the vehicle. The other gun is a semi-automatic weapon with an extended magazine.

Neighbors who did not want to appear on camera told ABC7 they heard gunshots before seeing officers swarming the scene.

Several streets surrounding the scene were blocked off while police continued to investigate Monday evening.

A massive police presence could be also seen outside the hospital at East 57th Street and South Cottage Grove Avenue.

The Civilian Office of Police Accountability is responding, and the Mobile Command Post also arrived on the scene.

Snelling said CPD is not yet releasing the officer's name in order to let his family grieve.

Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson also spoke at Monday night's press conference, and he and Snelling asked Chicago residents to keep the officer's family in their thoughts.
