CHICAGO (WLS) -- The city of Chicago continues to grapple with gun violence, which impacts hundreds of people every year. As of July 7, 2024, there have been almost 1,200 total reported shootings in the city, according to the Chicago Police Department.

"We cannot take our eyes off the ball," Chicago Police Superintendent Larry Snelling said at a news conference following a violent July 4 holiday weekend. "We cannot stop thinking about the people who have been victimized by this crime."

While long holiday weekends often see a spike in gun violence, Chicago police and city officials are working to curb shootings and make the city safer.

Teen found dead with gunshot wound to head on South Side, CPD says

A 15-year-old boy was found dead with a gunshot wound to the head Wednesday evening on the city's South Side.

Officers responded to a gunshot detection alert around 5:41 p.m. in the 7100 block of South King Drive in Greater Grand Crossing, Chicago police said.

The boy was found at the scene and was taken to Comer Children's Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

A person of interest was taken into custody, police said. Detectives continue to investigate.

Man shot in South Shore, Chicago police said

A man was shot while walking into a house on the city's South Side, police said.

The shooting happened around 11:40 p.m. on Tuesday night in the 7800-block of Colfax Avenue in the South Shore neighborhood, according to CPD.

The man,20, was walking into a house when he was shot in the leg. He was taken to the hospital in fair condition.

There is no one in custody. CPD Area Two detectives are investigating.

Man, 18, shot to death in South Side house, Chicago police say

An 18-year-old was shot to death on Tuesday night on the city's South Side, Chicago police said.

The shooting happened around 10:56 p.m. in a house in the 8500-block of Parnell Avenue in the Gresham neighborhood.

The man was shot multiple times and died at the scene.

No one in custody. CPD Area Two detectives are investigating.

Argument leads to deadly shooting in Bronzeville, Chicago police say

A fight led to a deadly shooting on the city's South Side, according to Chicago police.

The shooting happened around 3:34 a.m. on Wednesday in the 500-block of 47th Street in the Bronzeville neighborhood.

Two men were arguing, when one of started to shoot.

The victim, a 26-year-old man, was shot in the chest and an arm. He was taken to the hospital where he later died.

No one is in custody.
