Chicago shootings: Tracking gun violence in 2024

CHICAGO (WLS) -- The city of Chicago continues to grapple with gun violence, which impacts hundreds of people every year. As of July 7, 2024, there have been almost 1,200 total reported shootings in the city, according to the Chicago Police Department.

"We cannot take our eyes off the ball," Chicago Police Superintendent Larry Snelling said at a news conference following a violent July 4 holiday weekend. "We cannot stop thinking about the people who have been victimized by this crime."

While long holiday weekends often see a spike in gun violence, Chicago police and city officials are working to curb shootings and make the city safer.

2 teens critically injured in Back of the Yards shooting, CPD says

Two teenage boys are in critical condition after being shot Saturday on the city's South Side.

The shooting happened just after 6 p.m. in the 4800 block of South Winchester Avenue, in the Back of the Yards neighborhood, Chicago police said.

The victims were at the location when an unknown vehicle drove by and someone inside pulled out a firearm and began to shoot at them, police said.

A 15-year-old male victim was shot in the abdomen and was taken to Comer Children's Hospital, initially reported to be in critical condition, police said. A 17-year-old male victim was shot in the arm and armpit and was also taken to Comer in critical condition, police said.

No further information about the shooting was immediately available. No one was in custody. Chicago police continue to investigate.

3 men shot, 1 critically injured, in Austin, CPD says

Three men were shot, one critically in the city's South Austin neighborhood on Saturday, Chicago police said.

This happened just after midnight in the 5000-block of West Madison on the West Side.

Investigators said a group of people got out of a white sedan and began shooting at another vehicle. Police said a man, 33, in a moving vehicle was shot in the thigh. He was taken to Stroger Hospital in good condition.

A 43-year-old man who was standing nearby sustained a gunshot wound to the face and was transported to Loretto Hospital where he is listed in critical condition.

A third man, 51, was was also standing outside and sustained a gunshot wound to the torso and leg. He was taken to Mt. Sinai in serious condition.

Teen shot on West Side, Chicago police say

A 16-year-old boy was shot on Chicago's West Side early Friday morning, Chicago police said.

The teen was walking in the 100-block of North Pulaski Road about 1:15 a.m. in the city's West Garfield Park neighborhood, when shots were fired, CPD said.

He was dropped off at Mt. Sinai hospital, and is in good condition, with a gunshot wound to his hand, police said.

No one was in custody later Friday morning.

Area Four detectives are investigating.

3 injured, 1 seriously, in Auburn Gresham shooting: Chicago police

Three people were injured, one seriously, in a shooting in Chicago's Auburn Gresham neighborhood early Friday morning, Chicago police said.

The victims were sitting in a parked vehicle in the 8300-block of South Ashland Avenue just after 1 a.m. when shots were fired, CPD said.

A Chicago shooting injured 3, 1 seriously, on Ashland in Auburn Gresham early Friday morning, CPD said. It was not clear what led up to the incident.

A 40-year-old woman was shot in the head, and taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn in serious condition; a 30-year-old man was shot in the shoulder and taken to Christ in good condition; and a 40-year-old man was taken to University of Chicago Medical Center in good condition, with a gunshot wound to his left hand.

No one was in custody later Friday morning, and Area One detectives are investigating what led up to the incident.
