Chicago shootings: Tracking gun violence in 2024

CHICAGO (WLS) -- The city of Chicago continues to grapple with gun violence, which impacts hundreds of people every year. As of July 7, 2024, there have been almost 1,200 total reported shootings in the city, according to the Chicago Police Department.
"We cannot take our eyes off the ball," Chicago Police Superintendent Larry Snelling said at a news conference following a violent July 4 holiday weekend. "We cannot stop thinking about the people who have been victimized by this crime."
While long holiday weekends often see a spike in gun violence, Chicago police and city officials are working to curb shootings and make the city safer.

Chicago police release video of person of interest in killing of postal worker in West Pullman
Chicago police released images and video of a person of interest in the killing of a postal worker.
Octavia Redmond was shot to death last month while on her route in the West Pullman neighborhood's 12100-block of South Harvard Avenue.

Police said someone drove up and shot Redmond multiple times before driving away.
According to investigators, the person they are looking for was seen near West 70th Street and South Campbell Avenue before the shooting. They were last seen wearing a black hoodie, black pants and black shoes.
The U.S. Postal Inspection Service is offering a reward of up to $250,000 for tips leading to the arrest and conviction of the shooter.

Man shot inside Andersonville's Primo Pizza, police say
The shooting happened at the Andersonville neighborhood's Primo Pizza in the 5600-block of North Clark Street just after 9 p.m.
Police said a 22-year-old man was inside the restaurant when multiple people started arguing with him.
Someone in the group took out a gun and fired at the man, striking him multiple times before fleeing the scene on foot, police said.
The victim, shot in his thigh, was transported to St. Francis Hospital, where he is listed in fair condition.

Man shot to death inside vehicle in Chicago Lawn, police say
A man was shot to death inside a vehicle on Chicago's South Side on Saturday evening, police said.
Police said the shooting happened in the Chicago Lawn neighborhood's 7200-block of South Washtenaw Avenue just after 7:15 p.m.

Man killed in Chinatown shooting, Chicago police say
A man was shot to death on the city's South Side on Sunday morning, Chicago police said.
Police said the shooting happened in the Chinatown neighborhood's 400-block of West Cermak Road around 7 a.m.
