CHICAGO (WLS) -- The city of Chicago continues to grapple with gun violence, which impacts hundreds of people every year. As of July 7, 2024, there have been almost 1,200 total reported shootings in the city, according to the Chicago Police Department.

"We cannot take our eyes off the ball," Chicago Police Superintendent Larry Snelling said at a news conference following a violent July 4 holiday weekend. "We cannot stop thinking about the people who have been victimized by this crime."

While long holiday weekends often see a spike in gun violence, Chicago police and city officials are working to curb shootings and make the city safer.

Man shot in the face while driving in Bridgeport, police say

A man was critically injured while driving in the Bridgeport neighborhood on Sunday, Chicago police said.

The shooting happened around 4:04 a.m. in the 3100-Block of Morgan Street, police said.

A 36-year-old man was driving when was shot at by an offender traveling in a gray SUV.

The victim was shot in the face and taken to the hospital in critical condition.

No one in custody.

Man shot in Lawndale while trying to buy item from online marketplace: Chicago police

A man was shot while trying to purchase something from an online marketplace on Saturday afternoon, Chicago police said.

Police said the shooting happened in the Lawndale neighborhood's 3400-block of West Douglas Boulevard just after 3 p.m.

A 23-year-old man met someone there through an online marketplace, police said.

That's when three male suspects, whose ages were not immediately known, confronted the man and took out guns before opening fire.

The victim, shot in his leg and shoulder, was transported to Christ Hospital in fair condition.

There is no one in custody and area detectives are investigating.

Police did not immediately provide further information about the shooting.

Woman injured, 2 in custody after South Chicago carjacking leads to shooting: police

Two people are in custody after an armed carjacking led to a shooting on the city's South Side on Friday night, Chicago police said.

Police said it all unfolded in the South Chicago neighborhood's 8100-block of South Escanaba Avenue just before 8:15 p.m.

A male victim, whose age was not immediately known, was on the street, next to his vehicle, when two suspects approached him, took out guns, and demanded his vehicle, police said.

Police said the suspects then fled in the victim's vehicle. The victim, along with a 41-year-old woman, followed them in a separate vehicle.

The suspects fired shots at the two victims, grazing the woman's shoulder, police said. She was transported to the University of Chicago Hospital in good condition.

Responding officers found the male victim's vehicle in the 7900-block of South Escanaba Avenue.

Two suspects are in custody, and officers recovered a firearm from the scene.

Area Two detectives are investigating.

Teen boy critically injured in Hyde Park shooting, Chicago police say

A teen was shot and critically injured on the city's South Side on Friday night, Chicago police said.

Police said the shooting happened in the Hyde Park's neighborhood's 700 block of East 53rd Street at about 7:46 p.m.

A 16-year-old boy was in a park when two people approached him and one shot him multiple times, police said.

The teen was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center in critical condition.

No one is in custody.

The shooting happened less than an hour after someone was shot on the border of Hyde Park and Woodlawn.
