Chicago shootings: Tracking gun violence in 2024

CHICAGO (WLS) -- The city of Chicago continues to grapple with gun violence, which impacts hundreds of people every year. As of July 7, 2024, there have been almost 1,200 total reported shootings in the city, according to the Chicago Police Department.
"We cannot take our eyes off the ball," Chicago Police Superintendent Larry Snelling said at a news conference following a violent July 4 holiday weekend. "We cannot stop thinking about the people who have been victimized by this crime."
While long holiday weekends often see a spike in gun violence, Chicago police and city officials are working to curb shootings and make the city safer.

3 shot, including 2 employees, inside Brighton Park gas station: police
Three people were wounded in a shooting inside a Brighton Park gas station Tuesday night, Chicago police said.
The shooting occurred at about 10:08 p.m. in the 3400-block of South California Avenue.
Police said four suspects were chasing a 25-year-old man and two of the suspects were firing at him as he ran into the gas station.
The 25-year-old man was wounded in the abdomen and both legs and transported to Mt. Sinai Hospital, where he was in critical condition.
Two gas station employees, a 26 -year-old man and 25-year-old man, were also critically wounded, police said.

Person shot, seriously injured near CTA Red Line station in Rogers Park, CFD says
A person was seriously injured in a shooting near a North Side CTA Red Line stop on Tuesday night, the Chicago Fire Department said.
CFD said the shooting happened in the Rogers Park neighborhood near the Howard station on North Paulina Street.
An adult was shot and taken to St. Francis Hospital in serious condition just after 9 p.m., CFD said.
What led up to the shooting was not immediately clear.
Authorities did not immediately provide further information about the shooting.

Woman speaks out after being shot by apparent stray bullet in West Rogers Park apartment
A 25-year-old Chicago woman is back home, after being hit by an apparent stray bullet inside her apartment early Tuesday morning.
The bullet came through her fourth-floor apartment window.
There was a Chicago shooting early Tuesday morning. A woman was shot by an apparent stray bullet inside a Fitch Avenue home in West Rogers Park.
The shooting happened in Chicago's West Rogers Park neighborhood in the 2500-block of West Fitch Avenue about 12:30 a.m.
Chicago police are investigating to try to determine where the bullet came from.
