CHICAGO (WLS) -- The city of Chicago continues to grapple with gun violence, which impacts hundreds of people every year. As of July 7, 2024, there have been almost 1,200 total reported shootings in the city, according to the Chicago Police Department.

"We cannot take our eyes off the ball," Chicago Police Superintendent Larry Snelling said at a news conference following a violent July 4 holiday weekend. "We cannot stop thinking about the people who have been victimized by this crime."

While long holiday weekends often see a spike in gun violence, Chicago police and city officials are working to curb shootings and make the city safer.

Man shot to death in Oakland, police say

A man was shot to death in the Oakland neighborhood, Chicago police said.

The shooting happened at about 8:41 p.m. on Saturday night in the 3800-block of S Ellis Avenue.

Witnesses told police that two men shot a 32-year-old man and fled in a white vehicle.

The victim was taken to the hospital with multiple gunshot wounds to the chest. He died at U of C.

Nobody is in custody.

3-year-old boy grazed by bullet inside Woodlawn apartment: Chicago police

A toddler suffered a graze wound on the South Side on Friday afternoon, Chicago police said.

Police said the shooting happened inside an apartment in the Woodlawn neighborhood's 800-block of East 65th Street just after 4 p.m.

The child, a 3-year-old boy, was grazed in the arm.

The victim was transported to Comer Children's Hospital in good condition.

Police did not immediately provide information about what may have happened before the shooting.

No one is in custody and Area One detectives are investigating.

Man shot, killed in Gresham: police

A man has died after being shot in Gresham, according to Chicago police.

The shooting happened at about 7:59 a.m. in the 8600-block of South Morgan Street, police said.

A 32-year-old man was outside when two men approached him and started shooting.

The victim was taken to the hospital where they later died.

No one is in custody. Police said the suspects drove off in a blue vehicle.

Bishop Ford Freeway shooting on South Side shuts down highway for hours overnight: state police

A suspect fired a gun at another vehicle on the Bishop Ford Freeway Wednesday night on Chicago's South Side, shutting down the highway for hours overnight, Illinois State Police said.

The victim told police that he or she was driving north on Interstate 94, near 115th Street about 11:40 p.m., when a suspect fired a gun at the individual, while driving, police said.

A Chicago shooting left 1 injured near 111th Street on the Bishop Ford Freeway, Illinois State Police said. The roadway has since reopened.

The victim was not injured, and the suspect drove away, police said.

Illinois State Police initially said the person was shot.

The victim walked into a Chicago police station later to report the shooting.

Police did not immediately provide any additional information about the victim, including his or her age or gender.

It's also not clear what led up to the shooting.

Police shut down northbound I-94 from 130th to 111th streets about 12:10 a.m. Thursday to investigate.

All lanes reopened just before 3:50 a.m.

Police did not say if anyone was in custody.
