CHICAGO (WLS) -- The Mariachi Heritage Foundation, with the support of Mayor Emanuel, now has a credited program at five elementary schools.
The Mariachi Program is taught by mariachi legends and offers three graduate credit hours. Students at Richard Edwards Elementary Performing School learn the basics of mariachi music. 8 year-old Sofia Mendes loves the challenge
"It is not that easy and that is the fun part," says Mendes.
"Mariachi is not just our culture, it is universal. Our kids are going to learn the music," says Sophie's mother Leticia.
"This is an in school program where kids are going every single day to class, learning the violin," says Cesar Maldonado of the Mariachi Heritage Foundation, "and will lead them to improving academics."
"It is going to help our students not only learn about music but also about their heritage," says Principal Judy Sauri.
Instructors teach the students various songs. Siblings Carla and Samuel Viaromentes will be performing at a mariachi concert this Sunday when the Chicago Symphony Orchestra presents Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlan.
"They should have more Mexican music in the schools," says Carla.
"I like all music from the violin," says Samuel.
Eventually these students will learn how to play like the upperclassmen, using all the instruments that are a part of mariachi music.
