Popular Mexican tourist destinations included in State Dept. travel warning

WEST DUNDEE, Ill. (WLS) -- Mexico's tourist destinations have beautiful beaches - but recently, some of them also have increased crime rates.

The United States State Department has said that violent crime, some of it fueled by drug cartels, has invaded popular tourist destinations.

Five Mexican states have seen especially high rates of violent crime, including states that are home to tourist hubs like Acapulco, Ixtapa and Mazatlan. The State department has issued a travel warning for American citizens in those five states.

The warning means that U.S. government employees are forbidden to travel to those states.

Agents from West Dundee's Travel Leaders said they usually suggest Mexican destinations away from the states with travel warnings, but Lindy Lange said she wouldn't be deterred.

Travel experts said there are several common sense ways to stay safe in most any foreign city.

First, keep a low profile. Don't make it obvious that you're a tourist, wear expensive jewelry or handle cash in the open. If you leave the resort area, try to stay with a reputable guide and in public places.
