BUFFALO GROVE, Ill. (WLS) -- Mitchell Bender, 31, is charged with aggravated battery in an assault on his 72-year-old mother the afternoon before Mother's Day.

Bender, who lived with his mother in the home in 1300 block of Bristol Lane, is accused of attacking his mother at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday. He allegedly came up behind her while she was on the computer and threw her on the couch. He then beat her, prosecutors said, and threatened to kill her if she called authorities before fleeing the home.

Buffalo Grove police called Wauconda officials after learning that the victim owned a home there, too. After a two-hour standoff Sunday evening at the Wauconda home, Bender surrendered.

No weapons were recovered, officials said. He was taken into custody at 8 p.m.

Bender is being held on a $25,000 bail. The judge also required he speak with a mental health official before being released.
