Gold Coast Moncler store targeted again by smash-and-grab burglars

CHICAGO (WLS) -- For the second time in less than a year, police are investigating an apparent smash-and-grab at the Moncler store in Chicago's Gold Coast neighborhood.

Officers responded to a burglary alarm just after 5 a.m. Friday at the upscale outfitter, located on East Oak Street near North Rush Street.

They found the front door pried open and display cases shattered. Those cases held accessories and handbags.

Investigators said merchandise was stolen, but did not disclose an estimated value. Much of the outerwear at Moncler is sold for at least $1,000 each. The value adds up quickly.

High-end retailers in the area have been targeted for that very reason in the last few years.

"You think you're going to be in security here. At the same time, unfortunately, it's not so much of a shock. The crime rate is out of control and it's permeating all throughout the city," said Andrew Colom, a Gold Coast resident.

"It is kind of scary. You don't really know, if you're coming to work in the morning, if everything's going to be okay," said Michelle Dayiantis, who works at the nearby Alexis Bittar store.

Moncler was targeted by smash-and-grab burglars last fall. Merchandise estimated to be worth thousands of dollars was stolen.

Police found the front door of the store shattered just before 4 a.m. on Sept. 15, 2014. Officers said thieves had rammed a car into the store and took several racks of expensive coats before running away.

Moncler will be closed until police finish their investigation. The next step will be to try to track down surveillance video of the thieves.

No one is in custody.
