3 injured in Bridgeport fire

CHICAGO (WLS) -- Three people were injured - two of them seriously - in a fire in Chicago's Bridgeport neighborhood.

The Chicago Fire Dept. said the fire broke out in a building in the 2800-block of S. Archer Avenue just after 7 p.m. Tuesday. The three-story building houses apartments on the top two floors and an office on the first floor.

Flames could be seen shooting from a second-floor window as firefighters scrambled to keep them from spreading.

"Huge flames. Super scary. People getting injured. Streets being blocked off. It's scary. It's scary," said Tracy Kelly, a witness.

Four people were home at the time. Three of them were able to escape on their own, but one woman on the top floor had to be brought down by ladder.

"There was heavy flames showing from the second floor. Those flames were lapping up to the third floor, so the truck company actually had to make two efforts with the ladder to go up the ladder and bring the civilian down the ladder," said Chicago Fire Dept. Dep. District Chief Rosalind Jones.

The woman who was rescued is expected to be okay, but a man and woman who were on the second floor were injured more seriously.

"Our office of fire investigations is here attempting to determine the cause of the fire now," Jones said.

Investigators focused their attention Tuesday night on the second floor, where it appears the fire started. There are two apartment units on that floor.
