CHICAGO (WLS) -- Father's Day weekend came to a violent end in Chicago as a 3-year-old boy was shot on the city's South Side.
Police say he was sitting in a car when the gunfire erupted.
Community leaders are now pleading for the shooter's capture.
Devon Quinn and his father both ducked down in a green van when shots were fired, hoping they wouldn't be hit.
Investigators say the boy was shot in the right shoulder and rushed to the hospital.
The event happened around 6:15 p.m. on Sunday in the 6100 block of South Kimbark in the city's Woodlawn neighborhood.
The boy's father says someone pulled up and started firing shots at a crowd of people and Devon was hit.
The little boy was not the intended target.
Family members gathered in front of Comer Children's Hospital Sunday evening praying the 3-year-old boy recovers from his injuries.
Community activist Andrew Holmes is asking the community for help in fighting the violence in the streets.
"Come on out here, work the phones, work the streets, turned these individuals in," Holmes said.
Devon had to undergo surgery.
Police have no one in custody.
