GARY, Ind. (WLS) -- Fifteen new police officers could be hitting the streets of Gary by next spring.

The officers took the oath from Mayor Karen Freeman Wilson Wednesday along with six reserve officers.

The mayor says that brings the city's police force to 225. She says these new recruits are an important element in efforts to make Gary safer and to revitalize the city.

"People will want to bring their businesses here, people will want to bring larger businesses here because their employees will feel comfortable living here," she said.

The recruits will attend the police academy in November and receive their assignments when they graduate.
