CHICAGO (WLS) -- It appears a gang rivalry is behind the shots fired Monday afternoon near the parking lot of the Stony Island branch of Bank of America on 95th Street in Chicago's South Side, shattering the windows of the bank.
The alleged target, a 24-year-old man, was a passenger in a Chrysler 300 driven by his girlfriend. According to him, when they were leaving the strip mall a rival gang member driving another car saw them, pulled out a gun and started shooting. His girlfriend tried to drive away and the car got wedged on a median. Both the man and his girlfriend fled the car for cover in opposite directions, with the man taking shelter in the Bank of America, at which time the shooter shattered the bank's windows. According to the intended target, he had been shot by that rival gang member in the past.
According to the man, the shooter drove off once he was inside the bank. Neither the man, nor his girlfriend, nor any of the bank's customers or employees were injured.
The bank branch is closed for the day and it is not known when it will reopen. Bank of America and the branch's employees are working with Chicago police as they investigate the incident.
