ORANGE, Calif. -- A 9-year-old child was killed in the city of Orange after being struck by a motorist who then fled the scene.

Police say the child was struck at North Glassell and Wilson streets around 9:30 p.m. Thursday.

Family members identified the boy as Jessie Rosales.

A witness told Eyewitness News that Jessie was crossing the street along a crosswalk with his mother when he was struck. That witness said the car that struck Jessie appeared to be racing another vehicle.

It was unknown if Jessie's mother was also struck by the car.

According to reports not yet confirmed by police, the hit-and-run driver in a pickup truck was caught at North Glassell and Taft Avenue several blocks from the crash scene. Police would only say someone was detained at that second scene, but would not connect it to the fatal hit-and-run.

No further details were released by Orange police, who would only call the situation a "complex investigation."

Several bystanders say motorists drive too fast in the area, calling for more police presence.

The incident was under investigation.
