CHICAGO (WLS) -- Anti-Cruelty has opened a permanent resource center in Roseland, providing pet owners with access to free pet food and transportation for veterinary visits on the city's Far South Side.
The organization's Roseland Resource Center officially opened during an open house and ribbon-cutting ceremony Tuesday.
Darlene Duggan, president of Anti-Cruelty, said the center's services benefit both pets and their owners.
"We are keeping animals out of shelters and enhancing the quality of life, pets and people. That's a win win for everybody," Duggan said.
The resource center grew out of a partnership that began during the pandemic between Anti-Cruelty and Ald. Anthony Beale.
They worked together to provide pet food through a monthly food pantry.
According to Anti-Cruelty and local advocates, the success of those events highlighted the need for a permanent location, where Roseland residents could access support services for their pets.
Beale said the new facility provides a lasting presence in the community.
"Not only are you staying in the community, but will have a visible presence. People can drive past the facility," Beale said.
Joanne Jarrett, a client, said the center could help pet owners, particularly seniors, avoid having to surrender animals to shelters.
"Not every dog in shelter is unwanted. I have neighbors, seniors: It's hard for seniors. You don't want to put your animal in a shelter; so I think this is great for the area," Jarrett said.
Roseland pet owner Trena Davis, who previously received services through Anti-Cruelty's monthly visits, praised the organization's outreach efforts.
"Anti-Cruelty is really here for the community; they come get my dogs every so often. I'm so happy," Davis said.
The Roseland Resource Center is located at 519 E. 103rd St. and will be open on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Anti-Cruelty also offers free pet food and transportation to veterinarian appointments at their River North campus.
