Batavia police-involved shooting, suspect death investigation complete

BATAVIA, Ill. (WLS) -- A suspect who died after shots were fired at and by police officers last year in the west suburbs died from a self-inflicted gunshot , officials said Tuesday.

The shooting happened around 4 p.m. Aug. 16 in the 1200 block of East Wilson Street in Batavia, police said.

A 39-year-old man armed with a firearm allegedly fired at police officers, officials said. Officers also shot their weapons during the incident.

The Kane County Major Crimes Task Force investigated the police-involved shooting.

The investigation has now been completed and reviewed by the Kane County State's Attorney's Office, officials announced Tuesday.

Police responded Aug. 16 to a call of a person harming himself.

Police said 39-year-old Michael Seidelman fired at officers with an AR-15. They returned fire, and 30 minutes later, officers entered the apartment and found Seidelman dead.

An investigation found that he died from a self inflicted gunshot to the head, officials said.
