BUFFALO GROVE, Ill. (WLS) -- Counselors were on hand Wednesday at Buffalo Grove High School after some students witnessed a violent crash on campus.
A school employee, who students said is a crossing guard, was hit by a car as school let out Tuesday.
The crash happened around dismissal time.
Students said the staffer is a security guard who at the time was helping others cross the busy road.
He was last listed in critical condition.
"It's very unfortunate and its terrible," Buffalo Grove High School junior Jethro Woodard.
Students at Buffalo Grove High School were still trying to make sense of the tragedy Wednesday.
Police said around 3:20 p.m. Tuesday, a crash happened as a car was leaving the Buffalo Grove High School parking lot. Investigators said the car hit a pole, that then hit a staff member.
"He's a security guard at BG and had crosswalk duty and making sure cars stopped so kids can cross the road," Woodard said.
Officers responded to Dundee Road, where they gave the staffer medical attention before he was taken to the hospital with life threatening injuries.
ABC7's media partners at the Daily Herald shared a picture of the scene. Officers closed the road for over three hours as they investigated.
Police said the driver was not a student.
Wednesday morning, Buffalo Grove Police returned to the school as students were dropped off.
In a letter to parents, the principal said in part, "Several staff and students witnessed this serious accident. Traumatic events like this can be upsetting to hear about, and support is available at school for any students "
Police said the driver is cooperating with the investigation.
