CHICAGO (WLS) -- "Iceboy!" is the stage hit of the season at the Goodman Theatre downtown Chicago.
Cedric Yarbrough joins Megan Mullally and Nick Offerman for the world premiere; Chicago is the first to see it.
The Minnesota native talked about the wild story, inspired by a classic, full of laughs and ingenious plot twists.
It's called "Iceboy!" or "The Completely Untrue Story of How Eugene O'Neill Came to Write 'The Iceman Cometh.'"
A stage diva in the 1930s adopts a 40,000-year-old Neanderthal, frozen in a block of ice.
He thaws out and becomes a Broadway star. And he inspires a playwright to pen a masterpiece.
Yarbrough plays Floyd Richards, the playwright in love with an actress who's all about her "Iceboy!"
"To be able to do a live show with Nick Offerman and Megan Mullally in Chicago in the summertime and have a blast, it's everything I've always wanted to do," Yarbrough said. "The show is a little 'All About Eve,' a little 'Young Frankenstein,' with a splish splash of 'Mommie Dearest' and some kernels of 'Encino Man.' It's a fun romp; you don't even know what's going to happen."
Some might know Yarbrough from "RENO 911!"
"I think people like watching inept people do ridiculous things, and the fact it was an improvised show, we didn't know what was happening, is a surprise for the audience," Yarbrough said. "You're playing cops and robbers and we've all done that. And it's part of the joy of watching that show. It's a real honor to grace this stage, to do something like this for Chicago. It feels good to be a part of something people are feeling and enjoying and wanting to experience. And now with Chicago the buzz is out there. You hear people saying, 'I hear that Iceboy! is really funny. I gotta come see it.'"
"Iceboy!" is at the Goodman through Aug. 16. It's been extended several times by popular demand.
