CPD officer wounded during deadly shooting of Dexter Reed countersuing man's estate: court docs

CHICAGO (WLS) -- The ABC7 Chicago I-Team has learned a Chicago police officer shot in the wrist by 26-year-old Dexter Reed is countersuing the Reed estate over the injuries he suffered during the fatal 2024 traffic stop.

Officer Gregory Saint Louis, 29, was part of the plainclothes tactical team that pulled over Reed on March 21, 2024.

The city's Civilian Office of Police Accountability previously determined Reed shot first, hitting Saint Louis in the wrist.

Officers then fired 96 shots at Reed, hitting him 13 times. He later died.

According to this new counterclaim filed in federal court on Thursday, Saint Louis, "immediately sustained severe physical injuries, suffered great pain and emotional distress, was disabled and prevented from continuing in the performance of his duties."

Saint Louis is now countersuing the Reed estate, asking for, "Compensatory damages for all past and future economic losses," and "General damages for all past and future physical pain, mental suffering and anguish, emotional distress, and loss of normal life," among other grounds.

Reed's mother, Nicole Banks, filed a civil rights lawsuit against the city in April 2024, alleging the traffic stop was racially motivated and unconstitutional. The city has denied those allegations in court.

Last April, the Chicago City Council rejected a $1.25 million proposal to settle the litigation.

An attorney for the Reed family said Thursday, "This counterclaim is offensive to Dexter Reed's family. These Chicago police officers targeted and unjustifiably shot and killed Dexter Reed without cause or legal justification. The result - 96 shots and yet another tragedy in our community."
