CHICAGO (WLS) -- Here's a quick "government imposter" tip.
The FBI has been warning people about a scam where criminals are posing as city or county officials to trick you into paying fake planning and zoning permit fees.
Scammers pull real permit information from public websites and then send emails that look official, complete with your address, permit number and even real government logos and seals. Scammers say your permit could be delayed or canceled if you don't pay fast.
Always be skeptical of any threats or demands to send money quickly, especially if you're asked to send through wire transfer or payment app.
Hover over email names to make sure they are legit addresses.
When in doubt, call your city or county directly using the number on their official website.
