Michael Szot, 21, charged in Quarry Lake crash that killed 2

NAPERVILLE, Ill. (WLS) -- A driver faces serious criminal charges in a deadly crash in Naperville where the vehicle ended up in the park district quarry. The driver swam to shore, but two passengers died early Saturday.

It took a crane to pull the 2007 Chevy Impala from the water Saturday morning. The driver of the car, 21-year-old Michael Szot, drove off the road and into the water-filled quarry just before two in the morning.

He was able to escape the car and swim to safety, but divers recovered the bodies of his two passengers, Mihir Boddapalli and Sajaad Syed.

The two graduated Naperville North High School three years ago, where they ran cross country often running on the very path that surrounds the quarry where they died.

Former teammate Mohammed Kamran wanted to see the spot where his friends died.

"Everything went through my mind, like all the memories we'd had before, and how much everyone's going to miss them," said Mohammend Kamran, victim's friend.

Friends tell ABC7 Eyewitness News that the guys had been out earlier in the evening drinking. Police say Szot was legally drunk.

They have charged him with four counts of aggravated DUI causing the death of another and two counts of reckless homicide.

Szot went to Geneva High School, where ironically he was reportedly a member of the school's Students Against Drunk Driving group. The two victims were just weeks away from beginning their senior year in college.

"They were well liked, but they were also really good kids. One of them was captain of the cross country, too," Kamran said.
