Second City returns to stage after Old Town fire

CHICAGO (WLS) -- Three weeks after a fire destroyed the offices and damaged much of the building, the performers at Second City returned to the stage.

Four firefighters were hurt responding to the blaze in Chicago's Old Town neighborhood. The Second City is showing their appreciation by collecting donations for the Chicago firefighters after all of their shows in September.

"They did a tremendous job that day, and they really saved this place," said Tyler Alexander, VP, brand and marketing at Second City.

It could have been much worse. Firefighters helped contain the damage.

"What we try to do is try to concentrate on trying to minimize as much damage that would have occured," said Dep. Chief John McNicholas, Chicago Fire Dept.

The reopening is great news for neighboring businesses, like Corcoran's Pub.

"Our sales are down about 30 percent. You know, sometimes you take things for granted," said Eamonn Vaughn, Corcoran's Pub owner.

While Second City is the best known tenant in Piper's Alley, the fire caused serious damage to a number of other businesses. Fleet Feet Sports lost all of its inventory, and they have to entirely rebuild the inside of the store. They are still a couple months away from being ready to reopen.

"I've been in Old Town 19 years so this hurts," said Dave Zimmer, Fleet Feet Sports.

While Thursday night's performance was for firefighters only, all three stages will be back in business on Friday.
