CHICAGO (WLS) -- Storm strength has waned, but heavy rains and some flash flooding are possible in the Chicago area Thursday night, with the heaviest rain overnight. The worst of the storms appear to be mellowing as they move east according to ABC7 meteorologist Cheryl Scott. A strong band of storms is pushing into Northwestern Illinois, bringing three to five inches of rain. Those storms may stay stronger as they move east.

A tornado watch issued for southwest suburban counties was cancelled early. There are flash flood warnings throughout the area until 10 a.m. Friday.

The rain will continue through Friday morning and into Friday early afternoon.
