CHICAGO (WLS) -- Two people were injured in a drive-by shooting Monday afternoon in the South Shore neighborhood, Chicago police said.
A 17-year-old boy and a 20-year-old man were walking shortly after noon when they were shot in front of an apartment building near East 70th Street and South Chappel Avenue, according to police. Both victims were taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in serious condition with non-life-threatening injuries.
The teen, who was shot in the buttocks, is a junior at a charter school. He was running late to his noon session when he was shot, his cousin said.
The 20-year-old was hit in the leg and chest, police said.
"I just heard what sounded like a war, just really chaotic," said Pastor Jedidiah Brown, of the Chosen Generation Church, who was walking a block away. "People were screaming and running."
Police are still searching for the offender or offenders.
More than a dozen shell casings were recovered at the scene by investigators, police said. Some witnesses reported seeing a blue Audi speed away from the scene.
"He's not a gang banger," said Helena Henry, one of the victim's cousins. "He's a young man who goes to school. He knows everyone. Yes, we all know children and people out here on these streets, but these are these young men's means of survival."
Henry, a lifelong South Shore neighborhood resident, said gun violence in the area has been getting progressively worse.
"It's nothing for the children to do. It's no jobs, no after school programs, no funding, no field houses, no parents stepping up. You guys, we have no jobs. I mean we need help," Henry said. "It's sickening and it's sad. Please everybody needs to wake up and get a hold of our kids. Enough is enough."
