South Shore Line offers free westbound rides as promotion

CHESTERTON, Ind. -- A commuter rail line between northwest Indiana and Chicago plans to offer free westbound rides after rush hour next week.

The Times of Northwest Indiana reports the move is designed to promote the South Shore Line to new riders.

Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District General Manager Michael Noland announced the program this week. Free westbound rides will be offered all day Sunday and starting at 9:30 a.m. during weekdays next week.

Regular one-way fares of $6 and $13 will apply to eastbound routes from Chicago to Hammond and South Bend, Indiana. The campaign coincides with the Chicago Flower and Garden Show at Navy Pier.

Officials add that Chicagoans can take advantage of the promotion to visit Indiana and ride home for free.
