'Twin Strangers' project finds and connects uncanny lookalikes

What would it be like to meet someone who looks exactly like you?

"I would think to myself or aloud, 'Oh my God, that's my face,'" said Niamh Geaney, who recently met her lookalike. "I can't remember the number of times I said, 'This is so freaky.' It was truly amazing."

Geaney met her doppelganger, Karen Branigan, in Dublin this weekend. They live just an hour away, Geaney told ABC News.

The two were connected thanks to a project called "Twin Strangers."

The project is a friendly competition between Geaney and two friends, Terence Manzanga and Harry English, to see who can find their closest match using the power of social media. They're testing the expression that "there are 7 people in the world who look exactly like you," according to their website.

The trio, all in their mid-twenties, have been getting submissions from all over the world. They've set a deadline for the end of April and will vote on the best doppelgangers.

They're writing about their successes - and failures - on their blog.

One of the inspirations for the project was journalist Sophie Robehmed, who in 2011 found a woman who looked very similar to her thanks to word of mouth.

The friends said they're hoping the project will end up as an excuse to travel somewhere far away to meet their twins.

"I think we would all love a trip to New York, Paris or The Caribbean to meet our doppelganger!" English told ABC News.
