CHICAGO (WLS) -- Uber wants to recruit 10,000 new drivers to expand service on the city's South and West sides.

The ride-sharing service held its first of a series of job fairs on Monday.

Uber officials said one of every two rides begins or ends in the underserved areas.

"We can increase transportation options in our neighborhood while connecting our friends, families and neighbors with a flexible earning opportunity," Chicago Alderman Emma Mitts said.

Alderman Mitts said the Uber jobs pay an average of $15 to $20 an hour.

Job fairs are scheduled through the end of August.
