EF-1 tornado touched down in Kankakee County, NWS says

DWIGHT, Ill. -- The National Weather Service has confirmed one tornado touched down Sunday night as storms moved across northern Illinois.

Forecasters at the weather service office in Romeoville on Monday said the tornado ranked an EF-1 with estimated peak wind speeds of 100 mph. It touched down near Cabery in Kankakee County at 200 yards wide and traveled for about 2.2 miles. Survey crews on Monday also were surveying a possible tornado touchdown in northern Livingston County.

Strong storms moved across the region Sunday evening bringing lightning, high winds, pea-sized hail and heavy rain.

The weather service reported two destroyed grain bins and a shed near Herscher in Ford County along with downed power lines.
